Should i seal slate tile before grouting

What should it look like once it's sealed correctly vs. Will it make my tiles look a lot darker? What product will work best I've seen Aqua Mix mentioned several times? Will it make it a little shiny?

Hi b, Welcome! Beware, as many slates sold on the market today are not true slates. Do a quick TEST and soak a piece if available in a bucket of water overnight. If it doesn't turn to mud, you'll be ok. We do not suggest sealing the edge of the tiles. Now comes the tricky part. I have no problem applying one coat of sealer, grouting, cleaning, allow to dry, seal with an enhancing sealer or topical sealer. This procedure must be TESTed first, and depending on the slate will yield different results as Dave said.

Some of my favorite products for this procedure have been initial sealing with Prosoco's SLX , followed by one additional application of SLX , followed by a coat of Prosoco's Gloss n Guard after grout and slate cleaning. Another method would be almost any water based sealer prior to grouting, followed by slate and grout cleaning. Final step is a application of Sparks Stone Glamor. Sort and size your slate into thicknesses,,,lay the tick first and grading out to the edges with the thinner stuff where there will be less foot traffic. Wash the slate to get it clean and leave to dry
