Why do blazers have buttons on the sleeves




















They're trying to fit in as many body types as possible. The sleeves oftentimes are going to be really wide and things like that, but again, they're going for this is to have it fit as many body types as possible.

And by just sewing the buttons on the outside making these nonfunctional, it allows the sleeves to be adjusted quite a bit and you can just take the buttons off and move them, so now they're for decoration.

That's why this question makes sense. However, I would tell the gentleman to go ahead and leave them on for tradition's sake, but now that you understand this, be out there looking for jackets that you could find perhaps at thrift stores or now at higher end men's retail stores that actually have working sleeve. You're oftentimes not going to roll this up, but it's a very interesting bit of history. Napoleon demanded that his troops be clean in their appearance. They had this nasty habit of wiping their noses on their sleeve, so he had buttons sewn on the inside of the cuffs to prevent them from wiping either their nose or their mouth clean.

The vent at the back of a man's jacket is a symbol of the time soldiers rode horseback. They were once known widely as "surgeon's cuffs" that could be unbuttoned and rolled up so doctors could wash up as high as their wrists. Jackets with functioning buttons on the sleeves come at a price. Tailors say they present problems when it comes to alterations. Having a jacket tucked in at the shoulders could raise the sleeve buttons too high.

Shortening jacket sleeves at the cuff drops the buttons too low. If there's any advantage to jackets with buttons that don't open and close, it's that they're easily replaced.
