By gordy. Had a quick search and couldn't find anything relevant, although sometimes I've noticed the search function doesn't throw up any suggestions if your search title is only a few letters, I digress Cheers in advance for any light shed. If you run BPU, you are running more boost than stock. This means you will have to alter the fueling, which will be done via a piggyback ECU. If you install now parts that are an addition, but not really necessary e. The term bpu was, but don't remember seeing the pluses.
When you get past the basics and start adding on some trick kit, it's no longer BPU. There is no definitive list that I've ever seen. The stock ecu will initiate fuel cut when boost pressure reaches 1 bar for a 3 second period. In order to stop this, a device is needed in order to trick the ecu into thinking the boost pressure is lower.
The stock fuel pump in the jspecs is not considered suitable for BPU level power, the one in the export spec is higher specification and will be suitable.
However as many of these cars are approaching 13 years old it should be standard practice to replace the fuel pump. The Walbro pump is commonly used, however the standard pump that comes with the export spec is a better specification and has quieter operation though considerably more costly. There are two basic options:. Recommended, but non-essential parts:. A simple electronic or mechanical boost gauge can be mounted in the dash to view the boost pressure.
An electronic boost gauge is recommend as most will come with a peak hold or even playback function, thus allowing easier monitoring of maximum pressures. Also known as Exhaust Gas Temperature. This has a temperature probe fitted into one of the exhaust runners as close to the cylinder as possible.
It performs basically the same function as the AFR gauge by monitoring the condition of the exhaust gases. However there are some cons when comparing this to the afr gauge:. This could result in damage to the turbo blades. A safer place to tap the probe is in the exhaust or downpipe after the turbo. It will stop the risk of swarf ending up in the turbo and turbo damage in the event of probe failure.
There is a downside - Installing it post-turbo introduces such a big and variable heatsink into the equation it's pretty much useless. People take anything from to degC off the aforementioned maximum, meaning that your gauge could read degC and mean anything from imminent meltdown to running nicely.
A replacement or aftermarket intercooler isn't required, however you need to ensure your current intercooler is in good condition and allows smooth airflow though the core. Many of the stock IC's on older cars are now in very poor condition and suffer from corroded fins, if yours is like this it should be replaced prior to going bpu. SamuraiFlash 8 posts. Awesome thread this, makes BPU really easy to understand, is there not a typo under colder plugs, is it not Ik24 that are used for BPU rather than Ik It probably wont make much difference but i just thought thats what was generally recommended?
Is this definately correct? It's just that I'm trying to find more info on the and I can see that some people are using it but there's a common conception that this pump doesn't do very well at lifting fuel out of the tank. So, is this the pump that the UK cars have fitted as standard then?
Best guide I've read so far. Great job mate! FFS, everytime I point out this mistake, someone replies in front with a "great post! Great post. Cheers Carlos, I searched high and low and couldn't confirm or disprove the Export pump spec so left it as it was.
Seeing as it's CW who posted that I'll correct the article. It is a great post, btw. Thanks Homer. So can someone enlighten to an approx cost for the BPU stuff. The pressure causes a significant increase in the exhaust gas temperature in the manifold, which can lead to serious damage in the engine. However, in order to be able to drive the car permanently and with increased performance, you should do the following in both model variants: 1 Exhaust system from Cat also replace The standard exhaust system the pipe run from where, as standard, the two Kat's sit brakes the exhaust flow through their small diameter and the many bends pretty much.
In order to allow a nice, as uninhibited and thereby faster exhaust flow, not only the Kat's should be removed, but the whole system. There is a wide range of exhaust systems specifically designed for the Supra MKIV that are designed to do just that. So you need:. The standard engine control ECU will stop the gasoline flow as soon as it evaluates a boost pressure of 1. This is a simple security mechanism. There is a ready to buy part, which is looped into the signal line of the pressure sensor for the ECU.
This part is called "Fuel Cut Defender". It allows the pressure sensor signals to flow freely to the ECU up to a certain value approximately 0. Thus, permanently higher pressures are possible. Instructions: Installation of a BCC. In the J-spec model, the standard fuel pump is not sufficient for the BPU performance. In the export models, it is sufficient, but since most Supras are already over 13 years old, it should also be replaced. But even better is the Denso pump, which is also standard in the export model installed.
It is slightly more expensive, but also has a higher specification and works quieter. Higher boost pressure makes higher demands on the spark plugs. An electronic or mechanical boost display should be installed in the cockpit. The easiest way is where the watch is standard, because this has 52mm diameter and that is also the usual display diameter.
This gauge has a broadband sensor that measures the level of oxygen and gasoline in the exhaust stream. It is important to monitor this value for the following reason: Japanese turbo engines generally run very fat, ie more gasoline is injected than is burned. Instead of having to type out every basic mod a car had, we came up with this term.
In it's simplest form it describes a Supra that is running elevated boost. The downpipe replaces the factory CATS and allows for quicker turbo spooling and psi of boost increase. Good for around HP.
