Its walls must consist of alternating layers of a metallic and a non-metallic substance, say steel wool and cotton. And the inner surface of the device must be bare metal of some sort. Your heart rate will stabilize at a Goldilocks pace—neither too high nor too low. You will feel, in a word, enlivened. But take care not to stay too long. The minute you begin to feel nauseated, make your exit, for your body has been charged to capacity with orgone.
This is a story of a man who went from psychoanalysis wunderkind to enemy of Hitler to enemy of the US government, only to die a lonely death in prison. Yet somehow, almost a century later, his bonkers ideas live on.
Reich was born in Austria in , and rode the rising wave of the psychoanalysis discipline in the early 20th century under the wing of his mentor, none other than Sigmund Freud, according to Martin Gardner in his book Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science. He was a devout Marxist, and argued that the proletariat was so politically impotent because the workers were sexually repressed.
Revolution, Reich claimed, could only happen with an uninhibited release of sexual urges. It's helpful, therefore, to think of him as Freud meets Lenin meets Larry Flynt. An Orgone Energy Accumulator, pictured here with a nice soft focus that really only makes it that much creepier.
When I come across an item uniting William S. That Burroughs used an orgone accumulator is a pretty well known, and b not very surprising, given who Burroughs was. What is an orgone accumulator, anyway? One of the first experimental orgone accumulators.
Much larger version here. It proved to be the formula of living functioning as such. The color of orgone energy is blue or blue-gray. In our laboratory, atmospheric orgone is accumulated or concentrated by means of an apparatus specifically constructed for this purpose.
We succeeded in making it visible by arranging certain materials in a specific way. Its concentration or density is indicated on the static electroscope by the differences in the speed of the discharge.
Patients would sit inside the accumulator and absorb orgone energy through their skin and lungs. The accumulator had a healthy effect on blood and body tissue by improving the flow of life-energy and by releasing energy-blocks. Not everyone liked the theories Wilhelm Reich suggested.
Wilhelm Reich's work with cancer patients and the Orgone Accumulators received two very negative press articles. In , the FDA issued a complaint about an injunction against Reich, charging that he had violated the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act by delivering misbranded and adulterated devices in interstate commerce and by making false and misleading claims.
The FDA called the accumulators a sham and orgone-energy nonexistent. A judge issued an injunction that ordered all accumulators rented or owned by Reich and those working with him destroyed and all labeling referring to orgone-energy destroyed. Reich did not appear in person at the court proceedings, defending himself by letter.
Two years later, Wilhelm Reich was in jail for contempt of the injunction, the conviction based on the actions of an associate who did not obey the injunction and still possessed an accumulator.
On November 3, , Wilhelm Reich died in his jail cell of heart failure. In his last will and testament, Wilhelm Reich ordered that his works be sealed for fifty years, in hopes that the world would someday be a place better to accept his wondrous machines.
